SUPPORTERS DE MARSEILLE

Thank you  Jack and the entire team at Nevada Smiths for their web article on us:
Nous Sommes Les Marseillais
Olympique de Marseille have one of the best supported teams in the world, indeed they have the 10th best attendance in Europe with an average of over 51000 turning up to The Velodrome, beating out many of the greats of European football. All this despite not having a Ligue 1 title since 1992. Their greatest hour was of course the defeat of the mighty AC Milan in the 1993 Champions League Final when the likes of Marcel Desailly, Didier Deschamps, Basil Boli and a hair toting Fabien Barthez took home the greatest club prize in world Football.
OM New York are one of our best supporters clubs. Loyal to the death and with excellent organization, Les Marseillais turn up for games at the “Nevadrome” come rain or shine.

We’ve come a long way…
OM Paris

I’ve been in New York for about 4 years. After a memorable few years in Marseille, I arrived in Manhattan in early 2004. I was pretty impatient to find a place to watch games and it took me about 6 months to do so. I met up with fellow “Olympiens” in August of 2004. Shortly thereafter I saw my first French Classico at Nevada Smiths. At the time, the game was relegated downstairs. We did not even have the space to ourselves, sharing the room with a couple dozen Italian fans. About 45 people (30 OM fans and approx. 15 PSG fans) showed up that day to watch the game with a 2 hour delay. We all sat down and watched Marseille loose and extend PSG’s winning streak over us. Despite the poor result, I was amazed to see “so many people” watch a French League game. In the 3 and a half years that followed I witnessed the end of the loosing streak, our B team tie Paris’ A team, a full basement on one occasion, a full main room a year later. The crazy thing is that we were never even 100% certain that an American cable channel would even show the game. Well, fast forward to Feb. 17, 2008 and we find ourselves in a completely full bar, upstairs AND downstairs. Over 300 people, mostly OM fans, euphoric over their team’s current form and 2-1 victory over their rivals. Regulars, tourists, curious onlookers stayed to celebrate the occasion. A couple from Marseille, whose flight to JFK from France landed at 5pm, just as the match ended, picked up their luggage, hopped into a cab, and told the driver to take them to Nevada Smiths. I can’t wait to see where we will be in another 3 and a half years

What does the other side think?

In all honesty, I think that PSG supporters in NYC, as well as around the world, view this game in a similar manner as Marseille supporters. Do I think that PSG and Marseille have the best teams in the French league? No, nor do I think most PSG and Marseille fans would think that (it’s pretty safe to say that honor goes to Lyon). But both teams are to this day the most popular (as well as the most disliked) clubs in the country. It’s a fight to show who is the #1 titan during that respective year with all the historical and cultural implications that are involved. It is the New York and Boston rivalry of France, where regardless of how low each team is in the standings, it will always be “the” match of the year. With that said, I know that PSG fans have and always will have the deepest respect for their counterparts, which can best be shown by our two fan bases finally watching this great “classico” together, under one roof, in the same pub, on the same tv. In the end, that is what this rivalry and what soccer is about.

Dispite the painful defeat last Saurday, we can be comforted by the fact that we are still in contention to finish second and that thousands of miles and an ocean away from France, hundreds of supporters came out last Sunday to fill Nevada Smiths last Saurday (picture above).

Right place right time
Things seem to be coming together at the right moment: Cisse actually scoring; Ribery showing his worth; Nasri scoring a wonderful, long-awaited goal; Cana confirming his leadership role … now to use this to achieve our true objectives, all within reach. … and Monaco tends to be our home away from home.

The times, they are’a changin’…
Its been several years since we have qualified for the Champions League and more than a decade since we have been able to bring a trophy back to the old port. Well, for the first time in a LONG while both are within reach. I know I have been a bit pessimistic these past few months but until recently I have not had too much reason to smile.

Use them while we can …
Who knows what team we will have next year… who cares, the players we have now could bring us to the Champion’s League. With our team back at 100%, 5th place, 4 more home games, are a favorable schedule, the French Cup… but without three points at Valencienne, it would be as if our stars were never here. Hope is on the way?
Well its happened for the past 5 weeks, “if we don’t win this one its over, no Champions League”, at this point it may seem delusional to think there is still a reason to believe (we are 8th and 4 points out) yet it is now truer than ever. If we don’t get the three points we will find ourselves in the second half of the table, almost as close to relegation than to the third spot. Imaging 7 more League matches with nothing to play for should be reason enough to show up while there is still something to hope for. Redemption song
A week after an inspiring tie against the champions, l’OM follow-up with a 3-0 win at home against Nice. Niang gets the double and becomes the point-man in a resurgent attack. Civelli, the other scorer, makes amends with fans after his terrible error the previous week.
Who’s the man?
Really, who is? We’ve been guaranteed a Canadian savior to buy back the team from listless Dreyfus. Kachkar was his name and he was all over the place (TV, Press, Velodrome, Vieux Port, Carrefour Bonneveine etc…). Well for the last few weeks, as deadlines come and pass, he’s been a little more difficult to spot. Next deadline, March 26th…
He’s all grown up…
Our prodigal son Nasri has been called up to the National team, at 19 yrs of age. Congratulations and please don’t leave us!

Wouldn’t it be nice -
After a victorious tie in Lyon, Marseille face Nice in the Mediterranean derby. Time to make amends with the Velodrome and prove that they can find inspiration playing a team fighting relegation (although watch out for Kone). Here are a few links:

A History Lesson -
We will soon travel up the Rhone Valley to face the mighty Lyon, perennial French champions, 5 times going on 6. Given Marseille’s recent disarray (2 points in their last 5 matches, 8th place), the idea of playing Olympique Lyonnais could seem a bit depressing. Although the two teams have followed different paths over the last decade, 2 facts remain clearer than ever : Marseille is 1) by far the most popular team in all of France and 2) of course the only French winner of the Champions League (the latter became even more apparent this week). Great players will come and go but l’OM will always have their star. Post a comment.
